Modeling Leadership and Character for Youths
The Young Leaders Club activities are going on in schools. Leadership implementation workshops such as knitting or arts and crafts are also going on in the clubs. They are all providing a wonderful framework for tutors to model leadership and character, and for participants to implement the leadership principles they are learning. Creativity, innovation and excellence are some of the principles youths are learning in these workshops. Excellence taught in workshops does not end at the technical dimension of apprenticeship. Coaches also communicate leadership values such as integrity and the fear of God in their workshops. Some parents express their joy to see the contribution of the Young Leaders Club in the life or their children.
The mother of Young Leader TOUONENE Leaticia, an upper sixth student at college IPONI said: “I am so glad for the involvement of my daughter in the Young Leaders Club. My daughter had rebelled and was in a constant conflict with me, she was always seizing the slightest occasion to annoy me, and to challenge my authority. She constantly made very bad moral choices for her life, and as a result of all these, failed her Advanced Level examination last year. But to my greatest surprise she has become a model at home, ever since she got involved in the Young Leaders Club. Thanks for the time and energy that Young Leaders coaches invest in the life of my daughter.’’
Y2L Youths Learn Principles While Hiking
To end the activities of this second semester, young leaders of our three partners’ schools (College IPONI, College de la Victoire, College les Sapins) participated in a student-led hike at Mont Eloumden. The objective of this trip was to teach the young leaders the principles of endurance, perseverance and good attitude before life’s trials. Halfway up to the top of the montain, bees attacked the group and we were forced to stop the trip. While running back away from the bees, one student slipped and got injured.
He was examined by Dr. Florence Manyim on the spot and evacuated to the hospital immediately. This didn’t stop the Young Leaders from drawing the following leadership lessons:
• Failure is not bad in itself, but failure to draw a lesson from failure, is a mistake one ought to avoid.
• In a leadership crisis, one needs to decide quickly and well.
• Working in team makes us more effective than working alone.
